Four bids for a multi-street resurfacing project in Washington came in below the engineer’s estimate.
City council members Monday night approved an ordinance awarding the contract to N.B. West Contracting Co. Inc., which quoted a price of $531,402.22.
City Engineer Dan Boyce said the engineer’s estimate for the work was $657,535.80.
Boyce said the next step is to get approval of the contract from Missouri Department of Transportation. After MoDOT concurs, a pre-construction conference will be held with the contractor.
The project includes resurfacing International Avenue, Rabbit Trail Drive, Wenona Drive, Lexington Lane and Washington Heights Drive and installation of sidewalks in some areas. Curb repair and correcting a stormwater problem on Lexington Lane also are part of the project.
The work is expected to be done this spring and summer.
A federal grant obtained through the East-West Gateway Council of Governments (EWGW) will pay about 75 percent of the total costs.
The original project proposed under the federal Transportation Improvement Program for the St. Louis region called for sidewalks to be added along all the streets, but after residents raised objections, the city removed proposed sidewalks along Wenona Drive, Lexington Lane and Washington Heights Drive from the project.
The plan calls for 5-foot-wide sidewalks along the following areas:
• East side of International Avenue between Highway 100 north to the Burger Park entrance;
• West side of Rabbit Trail Drive between the two entrances to the Bank of Franklin County property; and
• East side of Rabbit Trail Drive from Highway 100 to the entrance to the Phoenix Center near Cinema 1 Plus.
Also in the plan is work to help alleviate stormwater drainage issues near Lexington Lane and Monticello Drive.
Other companies that submitted bids were:
Pace Construction Company, $532,500; Magruder Paving LLC, $537,843.24; Krupp Construction, $624,288.48; and Gershenson Construction Co., $678,972.08.
