A special presentation, Technology for Tots, will be offered Thursday, Feb. 7, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Washington School District’s Technology Learning Center.

The presenter will be Mary Beth Huxel, division chair of education, business and social science/teacher education coordinator with East Central College.

The free presentation is sponsored by Parents as Teachers. The event is for parents only.

Huxel said her presentation will focus on the technology and interactive media as tools in early childhood programs serving children from birth through age 8.

She said while people are fascinated by the new technologies that are available to the public, it is important to talk about how to use technology appropriately to enhance the development of the child and family.

“I am an advocate for the use of the new technologies in the home environment and preschool/childcare environments,” she said. “However, everyone needs to be educated on the developmentally appropriate use of such devices.”

Huxel said she is strong supporter of tablet technology with young children, especially using the camera on the device.

“The investigative learning you can do with the camera along with language extension stories is so important for young children,” she noted.

“If we use technologies to be investigators and problem solvers in the early childhood years, the students will continue to use those brain connections in 21st century learning,” Huxel added.

Pat Frank, Parents as Teachers coordinator, said she’s excited to have Huxel speak and encourages parents to attend.

“You don’t have to be in our program to come,” Frank said. “This is open to all in the community and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.”
