Organizers are “beyond thrilled” with the results of Washington’s first Baconfest, held Saturday, June 15, at the city fairgrounds swine pavilion.
“We are all so thrilled with the turnout, the vendors, the contests — it was far better than we could have anticipated,” said Lynne Unnerstall, one of the event chairs.
The Washington Rotary Club and Emmaus Home cosponsored the four-hour event, with 100 percent of proceeds to benefit the two organizations.
Final calculations aren’t yet complete, but Unnerstall estimates that 700 to 750 people attended the inaugural event.
The goal was to raise between $10,000 and $20,000 for the Rotary and Emmaus, and Unnerstall said she will be surprised if totals don’t meet or exceed the $20,000 goal.
Baconfest featured three contests — a best apparel contest, pig hollering contest and bacon-eating contest. The apparel contest and pig hollering were decided by applause.
Donald Creach edged out about a dozen competitors to win the bacon eating crown. Creach ate one pound of bacon in five minutes.
Creach received a crown made of bacon, a pig medal designed by Clemco Industries, a cutting board, skillet, T-shirt, bacon jewelry, and of course, bragging rights.
Bacon enthusiasts also could vote for their favorite of the 19 vendors.
The winner was The Finishing Touch, which offered pecan bacon knots. Wicked Gouda took second place with grilled cheese bacon sandwiches and The Fudge Shoppe won third place with its gooey butter bacon cake.
Winning vendors received a cash prize.
Unnerstall thanked the community for its support.
“This is Washington. We couldn’t do it without the volunteers,” she said, adding that the proceeds will be a huge help to both the Rotary and Emmaus.
Emmaus has a nearly $250,000 shortfall each year, she said.
“This is something we will absolutely do again,” she said. “We’ll be back next summer.”
