Students and staff at Augusta Elementary will be more comfortable next year once HVAC improvements are completed

At a special meeting last Thursday, the Washington School Board awarded a contract to Albert Arno Inc., St. Louis, for HVAC renovations for the entire school, including the gymnasium and cafeteria.

The bid package also includes lighting replacement in the gym and boiler replacement.

The total cost is $1,320,500. The project will be paid for through bond issue monies approved by voters in April.

Albert Arno is the low bidder, said Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer.

A total of six contractors requested bidding documents and four bids were received.

“We received very competitive bids and the interview process with the contractor went very well,” VanLeer told the board.

The district’s project team, which includes representation from the school board, district administration and Hoener Associates, the district’s architect, reviewed the bids and interviewed the low bidder.

Board President Scott Byrne, who is a member of the project team, said he feels very comfortable recommending Albert Arno. He added that the base bid, plus all alternatives, came in lower than budget estimates for the work.

The boiler replacement, HVAC renovations for the gym, cafeteria and the 1998 building addition, as well as the gym lighting, were all bid as alternatives.

The other bidders and their total bid prices are as follows: Lawlor Corporation, 1,410,700; Freise Construction Company, 1,510,200; Brockmiller Construction Inc., $1,511,400.

The engineer’s estimate for all of the work was $1,817,928.

The work will get started very quickly, school officials said.
