City crews continued crack sealing at the new skate park at Optimist Park this week, with a goal to begin painting the perimeter of the park before forecasted rain showers later this week.

“We really need a good three or four days of dry weather to paint and for the paint to cure,” said Darren Dunkle, parks director.

Once the surface is painted, the park will be ready to open to the public.

Dunkle reminded people that the park is not yet open because cracks in the surface can present a safety issue.

A grand opening will be set for sometime in May.

Drainage work also needs to be completed, but will not interfere with the opening of the park, Dunkle said.

Four tennis courts at Optimist Park were demolished to make way for the skate park. New tennis courts were constructed at Phoenix Park.

The city worked with American Ramp Company, doing business as Hardcore Shotcrete Skateparks, on the park design and construction.

A total of $250,000 was allocated in the city’s 2011-12 half-cent capital improvement sales tax budget for the skate park.
