Multi-Street Project Will Start Monday in Washington

The engineer’s estimate for the work was $657,535.80.

Andrea Lueken, assistant city engineer, said the scheduled date to start work on the project was April 1, but on Thursday MoDOT approved the contractor’s request to start work Monday, March 18.

The project includes resurfacing International Avenue, Rabbit Trail Drive, Wenona Drive, Lexington Lane and Washington Heights Drive and installation of sidewalks in some areas. Curb repair and correcting a stormwater problem on Lexington Lane also are part of the project.

Lueken said the first week the contractor plans to install the new stormwater system on Lexington.

The contractor has 50 working days to complete the project.

A federal grant obtained through the East-West Gateway Council of Governments (EWGW) will pay about 75 percent of the total costs.

The original project proposed under the federal Transportation Improvement Program for the St. Louis region called for sidewalks to be added along all the streets, but after residents raised objections, the city removed proposed sidewalks along Wenona Drive, Lexington Lane and Washington Heights Drive from the project.

The plan calls for 5-foot-wide sidewalks along the following areas:

• East side of International Avenue between Highway 100 north to the Burger Park entrance;

• West side of Rabbit Trail Drive between the two entrances to the Bank of Franklin County property; and

• East side of Rabbit Trail Drive from Highway 100 to the entrance to the Phoenix Center near Cinema 1 Plus.
