A fund-raiser to benefit the Fisher House will be held this Friday, May 24, in the parking lot between John G’s Bier Deck and the Taproom.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and a live band will perform at 6 p.m.

The event will feature several military displays, including a World War II Stuart Tank, up to 10 tables of memorabilia, a WWII Jeep and an Up-Armored Humvee.

The U.S. Army Reserve will supply a color guard to post and retire the colors.

Fireworks will be shot off by Skyview Crane after a live auction, about 9:30 or 10 p.m.

Fisher House Foundation

This year’s fund-raiser will benefit the Fisher House Foundation, which donates “comfort homes” to VA hospitals and care centers.

The homes are built on the grounds of major military and VA medical centers and enable family members to be close to a loved one during hospitalization.

The closest Fisher House is located near Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis.

The Fisher House program serves more than 17,000 families, and has made available more than four million days of lodging to family members since the program originated in 1990.

There is no charge for any family to stay at a Fisher House operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Fisher House Foundation uses donations to reimburse the individual Fisher Houses operated by the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Goals

The annual fund-raiser, in its fifth year, also has benefited Honor Flight in 2009, the downtown post office renovation in 2010, Wounded Warriors in 2011 and the Jaycees All-Abilities Playground in 2012.

Last year’s event raised about $10,500, according to Terry Heisler, who owns the Bier Deck, Taproom with his wife and organizes the event.

Heisler said this year’s goal is to raise $10,000 to $11,000 for the Fisher House Foundation.

“The importance of this event is to generate revenue for the military families who have gone through so much,” Heisler said. “Our goal is to help ease their pain in the hurdles they must endure in having a hurt or injured loved one who was supporting our country.”

Heisler said those who use the foundation have some burden lifted from their shoulders, because at least they don’t have to worry about where they’re going to stay, food and other necessities.

Reservations, Donations

Deck table reservations and auction donations are still being accepted by calling 636-239-5010 or 636-432-1337 after 5 p.m. Wednesday or Thursday.

Financial donations may be mailed to the John G’s Tap Room, 109 W. Main, Care of the Fisher House, Washington, MO 63090.
