Washington Police Chief Ken Hahn said his officers will be strictly enforcing speed limits in the Highway 100 construction zone between Highway 47 and High Street.

Work on widening that stretch of the highway is scheduled to begin Monday, April 8.

Hahn warns motorists that this area of the highway will be classified a construction zone which means that anyone convicted of speeding in the zone may be assessed an extra $250 fine in addition to the normal fine for exceeding the speed limit.

“Safety is the prime motivator of this effort, both for workers in the construction sone and motorists,” Hahn said. “There will be lane changes, detours and other temporary changes that may confuse drivers. All are encouraged to slow down and adhere to the temporary speed limits.”

The project, which is funded jointly by the city and the Missouri Department of Transportation, will continue through the summer, with completion scheduled for next September.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held this Friday, April 5, at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Highway 100 and Huxel Drive.
