A sure sign of summer is near with the opening of the Union Splash-N-Swimplex.

The city pool is scheduled to open Memorial Day Monday, May 27.

Union Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Arand said rain slowed the opening process, but the pool is ready for swimmers.

“We got a late start on the pool because of the rain and cooler weather, but a lot of municipalities have had the same problem,” he said. “The water is in the pool and we are hoping for warmer days.”

Arand noted that the pool staff, including concession stand employees, management and lifeguards have all been hired and trained.

“We are set to go,” he said. “The personnel are in place and everything is ready.”

Hours, Admission

The pool will be open from noon to 6 p.m. daily, except Tuesdays and Thursdays when the pool opens at 12:30 p.m. Admission is $4 and children 2 and under are admitted free with a paying adult.

Punch cards are available at the pool or at the parks and recreation department in the lower level of city hall.

There will be an increase in the cost for punch cards this year, Arand noted. The cards will be sold for $40 and are good for 20 visits. Last year the cards were $35.

Punch cards are available at the pool or at the parks and recreation department in the lower level of city hall.

The Splash-N-Swimplex is available for rent Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 7-10 p.m., however many of those slots already are filled, park officials said.

Last year, there were firmer age restrictions for those who can be unsupervised at the pool. Now, children aged 7 and under must be supervised by someone who is 12 years or older.

In the past, the rules stated children had to be at least 8 years old to be at the pool without adult supervision, but the rules did not list the age of those supervising younger children.

Pool Activities

A senior swim will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Also during those times, there will be “tot time” in the shallow area of the pool for children ages 3 and under. The cost is $1 per child.

Swim lessons will be available at the cost of $40 per child for a session. There will be morning or evening hours with four sessions to pick from starting June 3-13.

A second session will be held June 17-27, and other sessions from July 1-11 and July 15-25.

Water aerobics will be available Tuesday and Thursday evenings 7:15-8 p.m. The first session will begin June 11 and classes will be held through July 11.

The swim team will meet at the pool this year.
