The East Central College Foundation will award mini-grants to three departments totaling $9,000.
Each fall the Foundation sends out grant applications to all programs and departments on campus asking them to submit their requests, according to Shannon Grus, Foundation executive director.
Admissions, the math department and the Center for Workforce Development will all receive funding.
The mini-grants are awarded through the Foundation as designated by the Albert C. Buescher Memorial.
The Buescher Memorial is administered by the Foundation on behalf of the college for the purpose of enhancing programs and services that exceed the ordinary and normal operations of the college, Grus said.
The Buescher fund has an endowed value of over $120,000, she said. This year, $11,100 was available for the mini-grants.
The Foundation board approved the three grant requests at a recent meeting.
The Center for Workforce Development will receive $3,000 to offset the cost of training and services for its Nonprofit Leadership Institute. The Institute was funded by the Foundation in 2012 with $1,000 for scholarships, Grus said.
The Institute plans to offer six training sessions for nonprofit groups, a three-day intensive workshop, and host a quarterly forum for nonprofit directors. The Institute also will utilize Grus for several of its offerings to lower costs.
The math department will receive $3,000 for a pilot partnership with Washington High School designed to improve college readiness in math. This program will include early assessment in the high school, and a collaboration between ECC faculty and WHS to promote best practices.
Grus said about 300 WHS students and 60-plus summer bridge participants, along with parents, educators and the community, will all benefit from the program.
The grant will fund the costs of the software, promotional materials and supplies for the summer bridge program, she said.
The final mini-grant approved, also for $3,000, is for the admission office which wants to incorporate mobile technology and data tracking into its recruitment efforts.
Grus said the project will incorporate technology with the purchase of four Apple iPads, peripherals and a three-year subscription to Polldaddy online survey systems.
“The goal is to streamline the application process, track and more effectively communicate with prospective students and simplify the admission process,” she said.
The technology also will reduce printing costs, she added.
The project would be able to serve up to 5,000 people, Grus said.
Last year, the ECC Foundation awarded $8,282 in mini-grants to the biology/chemistry department, human resources and the library.
