Franklin County area residents will have an opportunity to share their opinions on local news media, how they consume news and their shopping habits.

The Missourian has retained the University of Missouri’s Journalism School to conduct a telephone survey to determine the readership habits of area residents.

The survey will take place on landlines and cellphones over the next two weeks, according to Publisher Bill Miller Sr.

The data collected will be used to help The Missourian better understand who our readers are and what they think of us, Miller explained.

Dr. Kenneth Fleming, Ph.D., director of the Center for Advanced Social Research at the Journalism School, is directing the survey. He has directed dozens of similar surveys for newspapers and other media outlets and organizations across the country.

Flemming said the survey takes about 10 minutes to complete and is absolutely voluntary. The information provided from those surveyed is kept confidential.

Researchers at the Journalism School will make randomly selected calls to area residents from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and on Sunday and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays.

“We care about what our readers think of us and how they use us,” Miller said. “We haven’t done a readership survey in several years so it’s time to take the pulse of the community to find out how we are doing and what we can do better.”
