Union R-XI has put together a steering committee to provide information to the public about a no-tax increase bond issue on the April ballot.

Traci Canby, Julie Duvall, Dennis Harrison, Pete Purschke, Dale Schmuke, Tricia Seeley, Tom Stahlman, Dave Sutton, Donald Voss, Tammy Weinhold and Gary Young have all volunteered to serve on the committee.

The group is comprised of diverse backgrounds, including local business owners, former and present school board members and educators, health care professionals, parents and city officials.

“Essentially, the committee is all very positive,” Superintendent Steve Bryant said. “They’re a very supportive group.”

Proposition Keep Improving District Safety (K.I.D.S.), is an $8 million no-tax increase bond issue that will allow the district to make improvements to its school buildings and central office.

If voters approve the proposition, the adjusted debt service levy of the school district is estimated to remain unchanged at 96 cents per $100 of assessed valuation of real and personal property.

Bryant likened the bond issue to borrowing of the equity of a home.

“The interest rate stays the same, but the length of the debt is extended,” he said.

The scope of work includes roof repair or replacement, new windows, tuck pointing, waterproofing, and improving the district’s heating, ventilation and air- conditioning (HVAC) system.

Additionally, the district is looking at putting in a new district-wide communication infrastructure and safety features, including a new door locking system and adding more video cameras.

The project also could include installing a new septic system at Beaufort Elementary.

Bryant told the school board at its meeting Wednesday, Feb. 20, that the committee wants to have a couple of open forums.

One tentative date is Tuesday, March 12, at the PTO meeting at Beaufort Elementary.

Another tentative date is Thursday, March 14, at the fine arts center.

“We’re also working on scheduling meetings with the Kiwanis, Rotary and Lions Club,” Bryant said. “We’re also open to other speaking engagements.”
