East Central College Board of Trustees unanimously passed a new policy Monday, Feb. 4, that will allow retiring faculty members to apply for emeritus status.

The policy will go into effect this spring.

According to the policy, faculty members, and those who have been retired for at least one year, with a minimum of 15 years of service are eligible to complete an application and submit it to the college’s human resources office.

In addition to 15 years of service, those who would be considered for emeritus status must have gone above and beyond what is required of a faculty member. This could include volunteering in the community, recognitions or awards received by the nominee.

“It’s an opportunity to recognize distinguished faculty members,” ECC President Jon Bauer said.

Applicants will be reviewed by a seven-member panel, appointed by the college president, that will include five faculty members, one administrator and one professional staff member.

The appointed committee will meet in the spring of each year and recommend emeritus status no later than the April board of trustees meeting. The president will then approve or reject the application.

The policy states that there will be limitations set by the board that will govern the number of applicants who will be granted emeritus status each year. Any applicant rejected because of those limitations will be automatically considered the following year. Applicants not granted the status for other reasons may apply again in two years.

Emeritus status can also be granted posthumously with applications made on behalf of the deceased that follow the policy guidelines.

Benefits of emeritus status include title of faculty emeritus status in all college publications and materials, the option to attend commencement in full academic regalia, tuition wavers and invitations to campus activities. The status also will include a certificate noting the emeritus appointment and placement of the name of the emeritus faculty on a plaque in prominent location on campus, a campus identification card and an ECC email address.
