The Crawford County Sheriff's Office said the St. Clair Junior High School student who was found dead in her home Tuesday night committed suicide.

Major Bill Harlan told The Missourian Thursday afternoon that 13-year-old Alexis Huff was found in her home west of Sullivan by a family member. The sheriff's office was dispatched to the residence at 7:08 p.m.

St. Clair R-XIII Superintendent Mike Murphy had sent a phone blast to patrons of the school district Wednesday afternoon stating that the student had passed away the night before.

Murphy provided little additional information at the time per the family's request.

The phone blast was sent, Murphy said, because both junior and senior high students were told about the student's death during the school day Wednesday, and he wanted to communicate that fact with parents.

The phone blast, sent shortly before 2 p.m., also stated that the student lived in Crawford County and only had been attending the R-XIII school for a couple of weeks.
