When the 2013 St. Clair High School Courtwarming coronation festivities take place on Friday night, seven of the eight king candidates will not be able to stick around after the crowning to enjoy the party.
They also will not be dressed in suits and ties when accompanying their formally dressed queen hopefuls on the gymnasium floor.
Instead, those seven senior boys will be donning their red and white Bulldogs basketball uniforms and shortly thereafter will concentrate on the Hillsboro Hawks in the regular-season hoop finale.
The annual weeklong winter celebration reaches its peak of excitement between the boys junior varsity and varsity hoop contests on Friday night as both a king and queen will be crowned. The Courtwarming theme this year is “Rock of Ages,” and activities are planned throughout the week leading up to the coronation in the gymnasium and the dance in the cafeteria after the basketball games.
“Courtwarming is a time for students to celebrate,” SCHS Student Council adviser Roberta Byers said. “We hope everyone enjoys the week of events.”
The eight king candidates are Adam Brott, Trevor Buffer, Coty DeClue, Neyko Dominguez, Austin Gotway, Evan Murphy, Evan Powell and Brandon York. Buffer is the only nonbasketball player on that list.
The queen candidates are Bree Anderson, Jaime Green, Veronica Guerra, Kayla Klenke, Sydnee Landing, Amanda Presley, Anna Reed and Taylor Townsend.
On Friday night, the Bulldog boys entertain Hillsboro with the JV contest tipping off at 6 p.m. When that game is over, the 16 candidates as well as crownbearers Kristen Sincox and Kyler Newton will be introduced. The king and queen will be crowned, hugs and handshakes will be exchanged, and the floor will be cleared for the boys varsity game.
Weekday Activities
A different spirit day is scheduled for Tuesday through Friday during the week, all aimed toward the “Rock of Ages” theme.
There is no school on Monday because of Presidents Day. Tuesday is “Rock ‘n’ Roll Day,” Wednesday is “1980s Day,” Thursday is “Punk Day” and Friday is “Bulldogs Rock Day.”
Students are encouraged to dress appropriately for each day during the week.
“I’m extra excited about this year’s theme, ‘Rock of Ages,’” said Sarah Dierker, SCHS’s other Student Council adviser. “I’m anxious to see all of the ‘80s attire, and I think there will be some great photo opportunities. The climate of the school goes hand-in-hand with student success, and events such as Courtwarming help to build the positive climate we need.”
Besides the spirit days, other activities will take place during the week.
At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, the annual powder buff volleyball tournament will take place in the gym. Boys in grades 9 through 12 will compete in a round-robin tournament, with the winning match delayed until Friday’s pep assembly.
Admission into the powderbuff event is $1. Proceeds will benefit St. Clair Special Olympians.
Friday’s pep assembly starts at about 2:30 p.m. and will include cheering, class games and a Courtwarming candidates’ shopping cart race and parade. The SCHS Spirit Stick class winner also will be announced. The criteria to win it include participation in spirit days, the powderbuff tourney, hall decorating and purchasing dance tickets. The hall decorating will feature each class decorating a wall in the Rock of Ages theme.
Community members are invited to attend the pep assembly. Donations will be accepted to support the local Special Olympics.
“SCHS Student Council organizes and plans these events to create a more positive atmosphere for the student body and the community,” Byers said.
