Thornton Road Improvements Discussed in Public Hearing

Property owners along North Thornton Road saw the final design for improvements of the road from Viaduct Street to Eagles View subdivision.
Cochran engineers David Christensen and Randy Shoemate presented details of the work to be completed at a Dec. 18 public hearing held at city hall.
The $753,883 project will be funded by an 80 percent federal grant with a 20 percent city of Pacific match.
Part of the city’s 20 percent match will be covered by a grant received from the Franklin County Transportation Commission, according to City Engineer Dan Rahn.
“The project is in the final design stage and we are currently acquiring right of way and easements,” Rahn said.
The work will consist of widening the road approximately 6 feet, an asphalt overlay, sidewalks and street lighting.
“The work is being done in an effort to improve safety and functionality of the roadway,” Rahn said. “The work is scheduled to be completed in 2013 and we hope to have it done this summer.”
The city has not selected a contractor, but when final approval is received from MoDOT the city will have a public bid as required, Rahn said.
About 20 people attended the hearing. Several of them owned property on or near the road.
Because of the way the road is used, work will have to be done without closing the road entirely, according to City Administrator Harold Selby.
