Old Rock Church Gets New Roof
By Pauline Masson, Pacific Editor
The Missourian
In Catawissa, St. Patrick’s Old Rock Church recently got a new green metal roof to match the roof of the Pross Pavilion that stands in the churchyard.
The large expenditure was made possible by a “good picnic year,” according o Billy Murphy, St. Patrick’s Preservation Society, which has hosted the picnics and maintained the church and grounds for more than 40 years.
The roof consisted of 30-foot by 18-inch interlocking panels. Graf Construction, Robertsville, was awarded the $31,000 contract to replace the roof.
“It was such a good year that we will have enough money to put a matching roof on the rectory,” Murphy said.
St. Patrick’s, a Catawissa parish dating back to 1853, is a log church next to the Meramec River. It closed in 1925 and was made a mission of St. James Catholic Church, Catawissa.
Construction on the Missouri limestone church, located on Rock Church Road in Catawissa, got under way in 1853, but construction stopped during the Civil War. It was completed in 1867 after the war ended.
Mass continues to be held there three times a year on St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day and to open the annual homecoming picnic the third Sunday in August.
