Downtown Washington Inc. is promoting Plaid Friday, an alternative to the big box stores’ Black Friday sales.
Plaid Friday is designed to promote both local and independently owned businesses during the holidays, according to Bridgette Kelch, executive director.
“Some of the downtown stores will have Black Friday sales and special hours and others will have Plaid Friday sales,” she said.
Small Business Saturday and Shop Small will be observed this Saturday.
Shop Small is a nationwide movement to celebrate small businesses every day and to help communities thrive.
Small Business Saturday is a day dedicated to supporting small businesses across the country. Founded by American Express in 2010, this day is celebrated each year on the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
The downtown group will give away four prizes in conjunction with Small Business Saturday promotion — Passport to Downtown Washington.
Shoppers can pick up a passport at one of the participating merchants and try to get 12 of the 16 stamps to be entered to win.
To be eligible to win the first-place prize, participants must get all 16 stamps.
The first-place prize is a trip to Downtown Lee’s Summit and includes two roundtrip Amtrak tickets, a one-night stay at The Browning Bed & Breakfast and gift certificates.
The other prizes include bed and breakfast gift certificates.
