The St. Louis Area Business Health Coalition recently released the second volume of its 2018 St. Louis Health Care Industry Overview report, focusing on hospitals.

The group identified hospitals that represented the “best value” to patients, based on several metrics, and Mercy Hospital Washington placed at the very top of its list.

“The caregivers and support staff at Mercy Hospital Washington work hard every day to provide excellent care to our patients,” said Eric Eoloff, president, Mercy Hospital Washington. “This is recognition of that hard work.”

The report considered two main categories when compiling and comparing the data on best value hospitals: Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) hospital star ratings, and average adjusted all-payer, cost per case figures.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) ranks all hospitals nationally on a 5-star rating system in order to aid consumers in their pursuit of safe, high-value care.

The star rating analyzes 57 measures of quality, such as rates of infections, complications, readmissions, patient experience and other outcomes and includes some aspects of efficient care delivery.

Fifteen percent of St. Louis area hospitals achieved the 5-star ranking, including Mercy Hospital Washington, against the national average of hospitals with that ranking of just 9 percent.

The report then compared hospital CMS star rating quality scores against average adjusted all-payer, cost per case figures. Among all St. Louis area 5-star hospitals, Mercy Hospital Washington had the lowest average adjusted payments, meaning they offered the best value to patients.
