The Washington School Board last Wednesday authorized Superintendent Dr. Lori VanLeer to finalize negotiations with Laclede Gas which wants to build a natural gas distribution facility on district property.
The proposed site is Highway 100 and St. John’s Road. The district purchased the property years ago for future construction. There is nothing on the property now.
VanLeer said a title search of the property is being conducted now to confirm there are no conflicts with other easement holders. She said the district’s legal counsel has reviewed the agreement which was amended to stipulate where the facility can be built and what type of fencing and shrubbery will be required.
There are positives associated with the proposed plan, VanLeer said, noting it would be beneficial to the district in the event construction is pursued on the property at a future date or if the district ever decided to sell the property.
VanLeer said Laclede wants to install the gas facility due to growth in that area. Straatmann Toyota recently broke ground on a new dealership across Highway 100 from the property the district owns, she said.
The facility will be built on a 30- by 30-foot parcel off St. John’s Road.
