Two local barbecue teams took top honors in the American Royal — the World’s Largest BBQ contest in Kansas City this past weekend.

A total of 545 teams competed this year for more than $80,000 in prizes. Within “The Royal,” there are two contests: The Invitational which has 153 current year national and international champions, and “The Open” contest in which anyone is eligible to compete.

Local team B&B BBQ & Catering was awarded “1st Place Pork” in the Invitational garnering the title of “Best Pork on the Planet” as well as eighth-place ribs in the Open contest. B&B is owned by Jeff and Tricia Brinker, Washington.

Another local team, Shake ’N Bake BBQ, New Haven, was awarded “1st Place Ribs” in the Open contest. Shake ’N Bake is owned by Tim and Terri Scheer, who own and operate Scheer Landscape Company as well as the Gateway BBQ Store.

At Scheer, visitors can find award-winning secret rubs and sauces that have been bottled. The shop also offers smokers, grills, rubs, fuels and accessories from all over the country.

Only eight first-place trophies were awarded at the competition.
