There is a new place in town where the guys can get a haircut and relax to sports on the big screen.
Upper Cuts, in Union, opened in December and features haircuts for men and boys.
The new business is owned by Priscilla McMullin, a lifelong Union resident. It is located at 217 E. Main St., where Belvia’s Bloom had been located on the Franklin County Courthouse Square.
McMullin had been working at a men’s salon in Chesterfield and wanted to work closer to home and offer affordable cuts.
What makes Upper Cuts different than other places, McMullin said, is the $10 haircut.
“I think times are hard now and a guy with a clean haircut is more likely to get a job,” she said, “and the kids need to look nice to go back to school.”
There is always sports on the 65-inch flat screen television and work to decorate the business is in progress.
There already is a bench resembling a baseball dugout. The walls soon will be adorned with pieces as part of a car theme.
McMullin is no stranger to cutting men’s hair — she has been cutting her husband Kevin’s hair since she was 18, and the couple have three boys.
“Naturally, sports and cars go right along with everything else in my life,” McMullin said.
Upper Cuts also offers a free beverage, coffee, soda or water, to each customer.
McMullin said although the business has only been open for a month, business has been steady.
“Surprisingly, for the time of year, we have been doing well,” she said. “We just offer a few things that others don’t.”
McMullin said that she recently received flowers from one family after she cut the hair of two boys.
“They said the boys didn’t mind coming in because this is a place for boys, not girls,” she said.
Now it is only McMullin who cuts hair, but that may change in the future. McMullin also plans to hold promotions throughout the year to help benefit schools or local charities.
The business also will feature a “Wall of Heroes” where customers can hang a photo of family members who serve, or have served in the military; or are first responders.
McMullin said the idea is a way to honor members of the community, as well as her brother who is a Marine.
“That is just a small way to say ‘thank you for your service,’ ” she said.
Upper Cuts is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
