Hillermann Nursery & Florist in Washington will be the site of a new farmers’ market.

The market is set to open Thursday, May 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Hillerman parking lot.

Sandi Hillermann McDonald, president, said many garden centers across the country have farmers’ markets.

She said the Hillermann Nursery market will provide another venue for local growers to sell items.

Hillermann McDonald has been working for several months with Janet Hurst, an extension specialist from Lincoln University in Jefferson City. Hurst is in charge of helping open markets in five counties.

The hours have been set so they do not conflict with the Washington Farmers’ Market, operated by the Chamber of Commerce, in Downtown Washington.

The Hillermann market hours will be Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“We’re just wanting to give farmers and vendors another opportunity (to sell their items),” said Hilllermann McDonald. “This is community helping community.”

She added the Hillermann market is not meant to compete with the downtown market.

Marketmasters for the season are Hillermann McDonald and Dave Wehmeyer, a Hillermann Nursery employee.

The goal is to operate a year-round market, with the vendors to move into the greenhouse in the winter months.

Another goal is to offer mostly food products, said Hillermann McDonald, adding that she would like to have 75 percent of products offered be fruits, vegetables and food items, and 25 percent be crafts or other items.

For more information on the market, including how to become a vendor, people may call Hillermann McDonald, 636-299-8452, or Wehmeyer, 636-299-6510.
