Toni’s Crafts and Home Decor, 201 W. Main St., has expanded to the lower level, which can be accessed through the back entrance off Oak Street. The expansion features more fabrics, fleece, used books and more space for alterations — including a bridal room. Toni’s Crafts and Home Decor in Downtown Washington is expanding at its current location.

The consignment/alterations shop, located at 201 W. Main St., will now also occupy the lower level, which can only be accessed through an outside door located off Oak Street.

The lower level will open Friday, Feb. 1, according to Toni Cavin, who has owned the shop for five years.

Alterations, sewing supplies, including zippers, buttons, thread, lace, interfacing and other items, a fleece room, bridal room and used book section will be offered downstairs in “Toni’s Underground.”

Cavin said she’s excited to offer an expanded selection of sewing items, fleece, used books and to have more space for alterations.

Many people requested books, Cavin said, which is why she decided to add it to the selection.

“The primary reason I decided to expand is because my alterations had outgrown my tiny little space,” she said.

The main floor will remain retail. The upstairs offers handmade or gently used items from 48 different consignors, including soaps, gift baskets, new clothing, wood benches, paintings, cards and more.

“There’s something for everyone,” said Cavin, who will accept special requests for items she doesn’t carry by email, at

Cavin has been doing alterations professionally for more than 40 years.

Grand Opening

A grand opening celebration will be held Saturday, Feb. 2.

Coffee and cake will be served downstairs and homemade jelly samples will be available upstairs, Cavin said.

The shop is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Evening appointments are available for bridal parties.

Alterations & Creations

Susan Saunders, owner of Alterations & Creations, is now leasing space at Toni’s Crafts and Home Decor.

Located in the back room on the main floor, Saunders offers basket supplies, custom sewing, alterations, chair caning, felting, custom baskets, quilts and other handmade items.

Saunders said sewing has always been a passion. In fact, she got her first sewing machine in third grade and has been sewing ever since.

“It’s been my dream to do this,” she said of opening her own shop. “I’ve been wanting to (open a shop) for a long time and finally I’ve had a couple people push me out to do it.”

Saunders, who has been weaving baskets for about 13 years, also teaches basket weaving classes and is available to give lessons at private basket parties.

Public classes are held twice each month on Saturdays at First Evangelical Free Church of Franklin County, Villa Ridge. Course participants go home with a finished basket.

Private classes must be scheduled one week in advance so Saunders has time to prepare the materials.

“I enjoy teaching as much as I enjoy making (baskets),” she said. “I think it’s an art that needs to be passed on.”
