Growing up in Kansas City, Karman and Chris Rayburn were raised eating barbecue.

Their love of the food has inspired an offshoot of their restaurant Blue Duck, a barbecue eatery called Smokey Duck.

The new restaurant will open May 6. It will be located in the old Blue Duck location, at 1381 High St., Suite 111.

“We’ve always loved barbecue,” said Chris Rayburn, adding that he started smoking meats about seven or eight years ago.

When Blue Duck moved to its riverfront location, the old building was left vacant and still furnished. The couple still has the lease on the space and decided to give a “true barbecue restaurant” a shot.

Hours and the menu both are limited, with only five meats to choose from, including brisket, pulled pork, turkey, duck and ribs; a few sides and pie for dessert. The restaurant also will offer meat by the pound for catering purposes.

“We would like to provide another good dining option for the town,” Rayburn said. “We’re going to try to focus on doing a few things really well.”

Kristina Studebaker will be the general manager. Jordan Knight, executive chef at Blue Duck, helped develop the sauces and rubs for the restaurant. Several employees from Blue Duck also will work at Smokey Duck.

Hours will be from Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
