For one local family, opening a business is about doing something everyone enjoys.
The Tetidrick family of Union recently opened Gamers Empire, at 1053 Washington Square.
Shelly Tetidrick owns the shop with her husband, Kenny. Their children Wesley Cochran, Kaitlin and Jonathan Tetidrick, and nephews Gabriel “Drake” Riesenbeck and Isaiah Weisenbach, who live with the couple, also will help out at the shop.
Gamers Empire buys, sells and trades video games, including for systems beginning with Sega Genesis through newer game systems like Playstation 4 and Xbox One. The store also has trading cards such as Magic of the Gathering, and will have Pokemon and YuGiOh cards.
Comic books, jewelry, collectibles, apparel and video game accessories also are offered.
Shelly Tetidrick said the store is working toward getting sanctioned through Wizards of the Coast so it can host Magic of the Gathering tournaments.
Tetidrick, who a bachelor’s degree in accounting, said her husband grew up reading comic books and her children love video games so the store seemed liked a perfect fit for the family.
Her husband medically retired from the U.S. Army in 2012.
“We were kind of at a transition where we didn’t really know what we were going to do,” she said, adding that she wanted flexibility to care for her family.
“It’s perfect timing now. It gives us an opportunity for us to grow closer together as a family.”
Several long tables are set up in the shop for card games. Snacks and drinks will be for sale for those playing card games. A television also is set up for visitors to test out games.
Tetidrick thanked consultant Michael Elliott with Game Start Stores who helped open the store.
Hours are Mondays through Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Fridays from 11 a.m. to midnight, Saturdays from noon to midnight and Sundays from noon to 9 p.m.
