Batteries R Us, previously located on A. Roy Drive, has moved to a new location at 1420 W. Fifth St., across from the Washington Elks Lodge.

The business, which is owned by Jerry and Dawn Fonner, Lake St. Clair, has been open for three years.

It carries a myriad of batteries, including digital and video chargers, lithium ion batteries, alkaline batteries, coin cell batteries, Energizer bulk packs, as well as specialty batteries for garage door openers, key fobs for car keys, cellphones, cordless phones and other batteries.

“Alkaline batteries have a shelf life of six to eight years,” said Dawn Fonner, adding that batteries are shipped every few weeks, so customers can be assured they’re getting fresh batteries.

Batteries that are not in stock can be ordered. Additionally, batteries for cars, trucks, tractors, bulldozers, buses and other large equipment are available for purchase. A bay is connected to the store, where batteries can be installed.

The Fonners noted that DEKA and Pro Series batteries are made in the United States. Pro Series parent company, Johnson Controls, is located in Missouri.

In addition to selling and installing batteries, the Fonners can rebuild battery packs for items such as drill packs.

Rebuilt batteries, which have a turnaround time of about two weeks, all carry a one-year warranty, Dawn Fonner said.

Jerry Fonner said people would be surprised that replacing batteries in products like thermometers, glucometers, computers and air hand dryers can be much cheaper than replacing the product.

The shop also sells personal flashlights, including the Nebo brand. The flashlights illuminate to 300 lumens and double as an SOS light, which lasts for 60 hours, a strobe light and has a sharp end so it can be used for safety.

Excited for Growth

The Fonners said they’re most excited about the opportunity for growth in the Washington community.

“Everybody needs batteries,” said Dawn Fonner, noting that Batteries R Us carries many specialty batteries that other stores don’t sell. The closest battery shop with specialty batteries is in St. Louis.

The Fonners also recycle batteries.

The couple encourages people to come visit the shop.

“We can get anything,” Jerry Fonner said. “If we don’t have it in stock, we can get it in a few days.”

Jerry Fonner was trained in electronics in 1959. He worked for Xerox for 26 years and worked for Magnavox working on computers.

The couple said they’re proud that the shop is not a franchise.

“It’s a small business, owned by a veteran,” said Dawn Fonner, adding that both veterans and senior citizens receive a discount at the shop.

The Fonners can ship batteries anywhere in the United States.
