John G’s Bier Deck in Downtown Washington will mark its fifth anniversary with a birthday bash this Friday, Aug. 16, at 7 p.m. Schmitts & Grins will perform.
Attendance prizes will be awarded.
John G’s opened for business Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, with eight beers on tap, nine bottled beers and eight wines, plus a one-page menu of food to choose from.
Currently, there are 13 beers on tap, 20-plus bottled beers, 25-plus wines and hard liquor, plus a two-page food menu.
The bier deck started out to be open April through November, however, with two covered structures and removable walls with fireplaces and heaters, the deck is open all year round.
John G’s was one of the first establishments in Washington to promote craft beer and local wines, according to Terry Heisler, who owns the business with his wife Geri.
Heisler said the bier deck’s success helped build the foundation for Washington’s own microbrew, the John G’s Tap Room and banquet hall, located in the old Droege’s grocery store.
The bier deck has given back to the community by holding annual fund-raisers for Honor Flight WWII, the Downtown Washington post office renovation, Wounded Warrior Project, Jaycees All-Abilities Park and the Fisher House Program for veterans’ families. A special fund-raiser also was held to help victims of the Joplin tornado.
Other events include the annual Shiver Fest in February, Easter Keg Hunt, Thanksgiving Homecoming party the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, and Christmas Carols Friday night after the Christmas parade.
The bier deck also is available for private events for businesses and other organizations.
Heisler suggests guests bring a lawn chair for Friday’s birthday bash because seating will be limited.
