Nancy Sebastian is the new sponsorship coordinator for The Missourian’s youth outreach program, Missourian In Education.

In her new position, Sebastian will raise funds to support the literacy programs organized and managed by the newspaper.

“The sponsorship coordinator position is a perfect fit for me as promoting literacy has always been near and dear to my heart,” Sebastian said. “Engaging young readers and their families has always been a top priority.”

Sebastian retired from a 30-year career teaching. She was a second-grade and kindergarten teacher in the Pattonville School District in St. Louis.

Sebastain said she took advantage of the Newspaper In Education program as a classroom teacher and greatly appreciated the educational opportunities available for children and their families.

“Promoting the program is easy as I know what an outstanding educational tool it is,” she said. “The Missourian is filled with great educational opportunities for grandparents and extended family to enjoy with children as well, and I look forward to connecting with community leaders to further promote this program.”

Sebastian and her husband, Steve, moved to Washington in May. Steve is the head golf professional at the Franklin County Country Club.

“This wonderful community is a perfect fit for us,” she said. “I find it exciting to be part of such a caring community. Visiting the Farmers’ Market, walking on the riverfront trail and attending various activities in Downtown Washington are things we enjoy.”

Sebastian said she and her husband will travel to Indiana in early December to bring back a Christmas tree for Downtown Washington Inc., something they did for the first time last year. The tree was decorated by the downtown organization and displayed on the corner of Main and Elm streets during the holiday season.

Sebastian was raised in northwest Missouri and earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary and early childhood education at Truman State University in Kirksville.

For the past five years she has been the junior director of the Missouri Women’s Golf Association. In that capacity she runs a junior championship as well as coaching a four-state team which competes each year against Iowa, Nebraska and Kansas.

“One of my most exciting MWGA moments this summer was serving as the official scorer at the MWGA Amateur Championship when Kayla Eckelkamp (of Washington) had a wonderful finish capturing second in the State Amateur Championship,” she said.

In her new job, Sebastian will work closely with Dawn Kitchell, director of educational services for The Missourian, on maintaining and improving the nationally recognized Missourian In Education program. Sebastian can be reached by email at mie@emissourian.com or 636-390-3009.
