Dead Fish

Several dozen fish in Lions Lake didn’t survive the harsh winter.

Parks and Recreation Director Darren Dunkle said the numerous dead fish at the lake shouldn’t concern residents.

“The conservation department said it was nothing to be alarmed about,” Dunkle said.

Dunkle said the water is fine, it just got too cold this winter.

“In talking with the department of conservation, they said this is normal with the type of winter we had,” Dunkle said.

The severe cold this winter created unusually thick, widespread ice. After the cold came snow, which the conservation department said can prevent light from reaching aquatic plants.

The mixture of the thick ice and snow affected vulnerable fish and some didn’t survive.
