A tied alderman race in New Haven was decided by a coin toss today at City Hall.

Gerald Sewell won the toss over John Estes.

Each candidate got 102 votes in the April 2 election, and there were two write-in votes.

Sewell will be sworn into office May 13 at the New Haven Board of Aldermen meeting, said City Clerk Kathy Trentmann.

Trentmann, who flipped the coin, said current Alderman Alan Bell will remain in office until Sewell is sworn in.

Bell did not seek re-election to the Ward 2 seat.
