The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office has determined that the 48-year-old man who shot himself in the leg on Wednesday night in the Lonedell area did so accidentally.

At 9:12 p.m. on Jan. 29, deputies and St. Clair fire and ambulance personnel responded to 645 Spring Drive on reports of a gunshot wound.

When they arrived, they found Perry Melton in his residence with the injury to his leg.

After investigating, deputies determined that Melton reportedly had shot himself with a handgun.

According to information from the sheriff’s office, Melton stated that he had been drinking and could not remember how the incident happened. He did say he recalled at one point taking the weapon out of his pocket and placing it on a table in his home.

The weapon, however, was found in his back pants pocket.

Melton was transported at about 9:40 p.m. by St. Clair Ambulance personnel to Mercy Hospital St. Louis.

An air ambulance had been placed on standby, but was not needed.

Spring Drive is located north of Highway 30 and east of Highway N near Hendricks Road.
