Stefan Kahlen, a regional historian living in the Westfalia region, south of Hannover, Germany, is researching the history of the Uthmann family and is seeking information on any relatives in this area.
The Uthmanns once lived in Kahlen’s home region until many of them emigrated to the United States in the 19th century, mostly between 1840 and 1860.
Kahlen’s research has found that some — or all — of the Uthmann family settled in St. Louis and Franklin County.
Johann Heinrich (John Henry) Uthmann, born 1817 in Hoerste, married Emilie Eleonore Cherouny. They had a son, Heinrich Wilhelm (William) Uthmann, born Aug. 10 or 11, 1845, in Germany. This family emigrated about 1856.
Records show that William had his confirmation in 1860 in St. Louis.
John Henry Uthmann’s brother, Wilhelm, and his wife Catharina Uthmann, emigrated in 1853 to St. Louis or Franklin County.
