Fourth-Grade Class Reads The Missourian
Wynn Scheer's fourth-graders at Fifth Street Elementary in Washington read The Missourian as part of the Newspaper In Education program.

The award-winning Newspaper in Education programs, Missourian In Education and Record In Education are educational outreach programs of the Missourian Publishing Company. These newspapers, with support from community partners, provide classroom newspapers, curriculum and training at no cost to area teachers.

Classroom subscriptions are available from September through May.

The Mission of our Newspaper In Education programs are to:

  • Introduce newspapers to young readers.
  • Provide teachers relevant resources to help meet academic goals.
  • Provide training in the effective use of the newspaper in the classroom.
  • Promote civic literacy to Missouri's young citizens.

Teachers may order newspapers at any time during the year for the duration of the school year. We request a minimum of 10 newspapers per delivery and suggest one per student. We ask that the newspapers be sent home with students following classroom use to encourage family reading and interaction. Newspapers must be used in an accredited classroom.

Every weekend issue of The Missourian and Thursday issue of The Record include youth features to encourage children to read and learn. Teacher guides are provided throughout the year to participating educators. We also organize several community events for families throughout the year to promote reading.

The Missourian Publishing Company welcomes feedback from teachers and parents on ways to promote youth reading in our community. Contact Dawn Kitchell, Educational Services Director, at or 636-932-4301.
