The deadline for the "Fired Up About Reading!" poster contest has been extended until 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 26, because of school cancellations due to winter weather. The winner will win his school a visit from award-winning children's author/illustrator Kenneth Kraegel on Friday, March 1.

To be entered into the contest, posters must be received at the Washington Missourian office at 14 W. Main Street, by 5 p.m. on the new deadline on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Kraegel's book, "King Arthur's Very Great Grandson," is a February Missourian Book Buzz Pick. He will be the featured guest at this year's community Family Reading Night, Friday, March 1, at Washington Middle School. Kraegel will make one school visit earlier that day to the winner of The Missourian's poster contest.

Students in grades K-8 are invited to create a poster that includes the title "Fired Up About Reading!”  Students’ posters may reflect anything that depicts the theme -- a favorite book, where they like to read, who they like to read with, a favorite author, a reading event, why reading is important … just to name a few examples.

Entries should be submitted on poster board or heavy paper, minimum 11x17 inches.  Any original media may be used to create a flat or two-dimensional effect (paint, crayon, colored pencil, charcoal, etc.) Student’s FIRST name only and age should be on the front of the poster in the bottom right corner. The following must be on the back of the poster in the upper left-hand corner: Name, Grade, Teacher and School.

The winning poster will earn the student’s school a visit from author/illustrator Kenneth Kraegel at 1 p.m. on Friday, March 1. The student will receive a copy of Kraegel’s book and will be photographed with the author/illustrator for the newspaper.

All posters received will be displayed during the free community Family Reading Night, Friday, March 1 at Washington Middle School.

To be entered into the contest, posters must be received at the Washington Missourian office at 14 W. Main Street, by an extended deadline of 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 26.

Official rules can be found here. For more information, contact Dawn Kitchell at kitchelld@emissourian.com or (636)932-4301.
