Make Shaw Nature Reserve a part of your families’ holiday tradition! We will have our gates open on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day so you can spend time outdoors while enjoying the holidays (please note: the Visitors Center and the Bascom House will be closed).

The fresh scent of pine will greet you on Wolf Run Trail and, if you come early in the morning, you might be rewarded with the sight of intricate frost flowers on goldenrod stems in the Whitmire Wildflower Garden.

Winter is a wonderful time to hike the trails, enjoy the winter scenery and practice your winter tree identification skills. Enjoy winter’s leaf-free panoramic view of the Meramec River Valley along the Overlook Trail behind the Maritz Trail House.

If you’re looking for an all-day adventure, bring a picnic lunch and hike to our expansive gravel bar. Make sure to look up in search of bald eagles that we’ve been seeing lately as they hunt up and down the river for fish.

On those snowy days, break out your cross-country skis or snow running shoes and explore our 14 miles of trails.

If you prefer seeing the sights with a group, join us Tuesday mornings (weather permitting) for our Trail Social Runs.

Stop in at the Bascom House on the weekend to warm up with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee and check out the Youth Photo Contest display.
