Reading Program at fair 2017017.jpg

The Missourian, Bank of Franklin County and the Washington Town & Country Fair are partnering on several events at the Fair to promote the importance of reading.

Beginning on Wednesday with the opening of the Fair, families can enjoy a reading nook in the Exhibitors Building — a place to take a break and sit and read together. The reading nook will be open throughout the Fair and will feature a variety of picture and chapter books.

Entries in the Missourian In Education Summer Reading Program, sponsored by the Bank of Franklin County and the Washington Town & Country Fair, will be on display in the reading nook. Children created their own version of the READ posters featured throughout the summer reading program in the newspaper.

On Thursday, a Reading Rocks Treasure Hunt will kick off at 4 p.m. Young readers can pick up a treasure map in the Family Fun Center and search for reading rocks hidden throughout the fairgrounds. The first to find a rock and return it before 5:30 p.m. will win a Reading Rocks T-shirt from Bank of Franklin County.

Ma and Pa Berenstain of the Berenstain Bears books will visit the Family Fun Center Thursday at 5:30 p.m. for the Reader Recognition Night program. The Bank of Franklin County will be giving away copies of the book “The Berenstain Bears: We Love the Library,” while supplies last.

Young readers who participated in The Missourian In Education Summer Reading Program will be recognized during the reading event.

The Grand Prize Reader Reward Basket, which will be awarded to a participant in attendance at the event, includes Missourian Book Buzz books, a 2019 Washington Town & Country Fair pass, a $50 gift certificate to Neighborhood Reads from Bank of Franklin County and other goodies and Fair memorabilia.

Ten $10 gift certificates to Neighborhood Reads bookstore also will be awarded.

Readers do not have to be in attendance to be eligible to win the gift certificates.
