Sarah Doell, a biology and integration of science and faith double major from Pacific, competed for the title of Miss Southwest Friday, March 7, at Southwest Baptist University.
Faculty selected eight juniors to compete for the titles of Mr. and Miss Southwest, an SBU tradition.
Each candidate was introduced through a creative video biography and a talent presentation. During intermission, audience members voted by text messaging, and four candidates made it through to the final round.
The final contestants then participated in a Q&A session led by the event’s emcees, students Meg Burns and Nik Fischer. A final round of text messaging voting determined the winners.
The pageant was organized by the University Activities Council as part of Bearcat Days, a two-day visit event for admitted prospective students who are considering attending SBU in the fall.
“The Mr. and Miss Southwest pageant has become such a fantastic event at SBU and one that I believe honors the tradition of Mr. and Miss Southwest, which has been in place for more than 50 years,” Penland said.
