Adam Braun, author of “The Promise of a Pencil: How an Ordinary Person Can Create Extraordinary Change,” will make a presentation at St. Louis County Library Tuesday, April 1, at 7 p.m. The library is located at 1640 S. Lindberg Blvd.

Following his presentation, Braun will sign copies of his book.

The following review of “The Promise of a Pencil” was written by Diane Disbro, Scenic Regional Library Union branch manager:

“While traveling the world during a semester abroad program, Adam Braun asked people, ‘If you could have anything in the world, what would you ask for?’ He wanted to get to know individuals better and thought that such an open-ended question would be a good conversation starter. When a poor boy in India told Braun that he wanted a pencil, Braun was shocked. Not a Nintendo? Not a fancy car? Not even a hot meal? No, the boy wanted a pencil.

“Braun soon found that people around the world are desperate for an education. They want pencils, paper and teachers. There are governments eager to educate their people but they lack the necessary resources.

“Beginning with a $25 deposit, Braun founded Pencils of Promise. The organization has now completed over 200 schools in Southeast Asia and Latin America.

“ ‘The Promise of a Pencil’ chronicles the birth of a dynamic movement to make a difference in the world, one school at a time.”
