Earth’s Classroom (EC), the outdoor experiential learning center in Rosebud, is accepting applications for its fifth annual grant-paid program for high school students.

This program has been funded by a grant from the federal 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant and New Belgium Brewing Company. A possible 34 students from 10 area high schools are eligible to participate.

The purpose is to provide a program exclusively with high school juniors and seniors who are interested in biology or chemistry education, wildlife biology, environmental studies, outdoor education, sustainable architecture, sustainable agriculture or similar career fields.

This program is called the Natural Resource Career Experience (NRCE).

Once a month throughout the school year (September-April), EC will provide a three- to five-hour, after school, experiential course. The instructors will mainly be from EC, but will also gain knowledge from professionals in Missouri Department of Conservation and Department of Natural Resources.

Each experiential course will be a different subject related to the field, so that students may see the diversity within the field and understand their personal passion.

Each monthly, afterschool, course follows geology, limnology (freshwater ecosystems), mammology, natural resource management, sustainable technologies, pre-cultural history, ornithology (birds) and herpetology (reptiles and amphibians.

The program caps with a three-day, two-night ecology canoe in which the previous topics are interrelated through the biology of the river system. All equipment and food are provided.

More details and the application are available on Earth’s Classroom’s home page at www.earthsclassroom.org. Applications are due to Earth’s Classroom by Aug. 30.
