Joyce Mentz, Washington, has been chosen to receive the Servant to the Poor Award at the 2013 Catholic Women’s Recognition Ceremony this Sunday, Aug. 18, at Holy Spirit Parish. This event is hosted by the Office of Laity and Family Life of the Archdiocese of St. Louis.

Mentz will be honored among this year’s group of inspiring women who serve the poor in extraordinary ways — women who have chosen to live simply (i.e., family caregivers: those who have regularly volunteered their time and professional services at shelters, clinics, or parishes; parish outreach volunteers).

The model for the Servant to the Poor Award is Mother Teresa.

Quiet and unassuming, Mentz has been active in St. Francis Borgia Parish, her community and beyond for many years. Her ministry in the parish includes the food pantry, Boy Scout’s Food Drive, Girl Scout’s April Showers, Encore Resale Shop, Secular Franciscans, Christmas Outreach and the Ladies Sodality Rummage Sale.

In the community she has worked with Mercy Hospital in a number of different programs, and also volunteered with the Harvest Table, Meals on Wheels, Franklin County Relay for Life and the Family Wellness Program.
