Abigail Gilbert’s Hampshire ram won supreme champion, and Brittany Byram’s Hampshire ewe won supreme champion in the 2014 Washington Town and Country Fair Sheep Show, Wednesday, Aug. 6.

Gilbert of Union also was named champion in the junior showmanship division while Allen Hale of Gerald was champion in the senior showmanship division.

There were 23 entries in the sheep show, which featured three breeds — Suffolk, Hampshire and Dorset.

Entries were down compared to last year, said Joyce Couch, sheep superintendent.

The quality of the animals was good and could stand competition, she added.

But the fact that entrants have to be in Franklin or an adjoining county to show as juniors can keep entries down, Couch noted.

The Washington Fair competes with the State Fair, which also can keep entries down, Couch added.

The sheep show was sponsored by the Nelson H. Hall Foundation and judged by Steve Neimeier of Lewistown, Ill.
