Police say a 75-year-old man died early Wednesday after driving the wrong way on Interstate 44 in Franklin County.
The Missouri Highway Patrol says Roy T. Blair of Richmond Heights drove westbound in the eastbound lanes for at least five miles before colliding with several other cars at about 4:30 a.m. east of Stanton.
Blair's car sideswiped a vehicle that had swerved to avoid a head-on collision, but that car then hit a tractor-trailer. The Blair car then collided with two more eastbound cars.
Highway Patrol Sgt. Al Nothum said Blair likely got on the highway at one of two St. Clair exits.
According to the patrol, three others were injured in the crash. They are Theresa R. King, 61, of Sullivan; Nicholas C. Moses, 47, of Spencer, Okla.; and Wade M. Hassler, 32, of Leasburg. All three were drivers of other vehicles heading eastbound on I-44.
King's injuries were listed as serious. The others were listed as minor.
They all were transported to Missouri Baptist Hospital in Sullivan.
