The Missourian In Education program gets under way on Monday with more than 2,400 classroom copies of this edition of the newspaper being delivered to more than 120 classrooms in 42 area schools.

The literacy program is funded by the Missourian Publishing Company in partnership with local businesses, organizations and individuals. The classroom newspapers used for instruction are provided at no cost to the schools.

The Missourian In Education program begins each year on or near Sept. 8 in celebration of International Literacy Day. Commemorated for 46 years by the United Nations, International Literacy Day highlights the worldwide importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies.

Some 775 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 60.7 million children are out of school and many more attend irregularly or drop out, according to UNESCO, a specialized agency within the United Nations.

Locally, the newspaper’s youth literacy efforts, including Missourian In Education and Book Buzz, aim to provide educators and young readers and their families with a local, relevant resource for learning, improving skills, finding real-life relevance in textbook topics, developing reading interests and habits, and connecting young people to their communities.

The youth series, “Vote Missouri,” also begins with this issue. The eight-part series teaches about the elected state offices of secretary of state, lieutenant governor, governor, senator and representative. Features also cover redistricting, voting and the electoral college process.

Teachers interested in using the newspaper in the classroom may still register online at www.emissourian.com/mie. The Missourian In Education pages at emissourian.com also feature downloadable order forms.
