ECC to Present ‘Miss Representation’ Screening, Discussion

The ECC Journalism Department and Words and Motion, the college film and speaker series, invite community members to campus for a free screening of the hit documentary “Miss Representation” Thursday, April 19.

The film will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Room 100 in the Health and Science Building on the Union campus. A panel discussion will follow.

“Miss Representation” brings to light instances of negative and oppressive portrayals of women in mainstream media.

Written and directed by Jennifer Siebel Newsom, the film argues that mainstream media contribute to the underrepresentation of women in positions of power and influence in America. It challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls.

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2011. Last October, Oprah Winfrey bought the rights to the documentary for broadcast on her cable network.

The film features stories from teenage girls and interviews with politicians, journalists, entertainers, activists and academics.

Condoleezza Rice, Nancy Pelosi, Katie Couric, Rachel Maddow, Margaret Cho, Rosario Dawson and Gloria Steinem are featured in the documentary.

After the film a panel of local women will discuss the film and field questions and comments from the audience.

The panel includes Chris Stuckenschneider, author and a columnist at the Washington Missourian; Linda Trest, features editor at the Gasconade County Republican; Paula Smith-Culp, psychology and sociology instructor at ECC; Eileen Roth, a counselor in the New Haven School District and leader of Girls on the Run; Cady Honey, ECC student and Cornerstone co-editor; and Leigh Kolb, ECC journalism instructor.
