"The Inevitable Collision of Birdie and Bash"

Birdie isn't supposed to be at the party in "The Inevitable Collision of Birdie and Bash," by Candace Ganger. But Sebastian “Bash” is – he’s there to keep his closest, and only friend Kyle in line.

Bash’s ex, a girl named Layla, is at the party and would like to get Bash’s attention, but she isn’t successful. Birdie is – and he becomes interested in this girl with the thick-framed glasses.

As the evening progresses, Bash offers to dance with her, and she eventually accepts his offer. Next thing you know, they go their different directions – Bash leaves with Kyle, heading to the trailer park where his friend lives. Bash offers to drive, but Kyle insists he’s okay, when actually he’s under the influence of alcohol.

As they're driving along, they hit something that they think is a deer. It’s impossible to tell for sure because it’s so dark outside.

The ensuing accident Kyle adds to Bash’s struggles with life. His beloved Ma is undergoing chemotherapy and Bash is failing chemistry. Birdie has her own share of troubles. Her brother Benny has gotten some bad news. He was in a medically induced coma, without a lot of hope for recover, but day-by-day he improves. Bash’s mother’s cancer, on the other hand, gets worse.

Readers will fall in love with Birdie and Bash, and the book’s reflection on honesty, love and being your authentic self. This book was one of my favorites because of Ganger's writing style. I also loved that the novel is mildly humorous, and tells a love story that you don't normally see. This book will tug at your heartstrings.
