A lady's maid in a prominent British household in Victorian England turns up missing early one morning after blood, hair and broken glass are found on the steps to the family’s home. Inspector Thomas Pitt, who has recently been promoted to commander of Special Branch, is called in to investigate.
Several weeks later, when a woman is found dead near the home, her body mutilated beyond recognition, the case becomes even more complicated.
The autopsy report shows that the woman was killed weeks earlier, her body kept in a very cold, sealed place where animals and bugs couldn't get to her, and then mutilated sometime after she died. The mystery deepens.
Is the body the missing maid? If so, could her employer, a naval weapons expert, have had anything to do with the murder?
