It might have been best not to mess with Stanley Peke, the gutsy, 72-year-old retiree in “Moving Day,” by Jonathan Stone. There’s plenty of pluck left in the senior, who sets off on a road trip in pursuit of thieves who have stripped him of his household possessions.

Pretending to be movers, a crew scams Stanley and his wife Rose, taking everything they’ve accumulated in their decades-old marriage.

But the fleecing comes at a price. What the thieves don’t know is that Stanley, though at times a bit forgetful, is far from having one foot in the grave. Bent on justice and revenge, the survivor of the Holocaust formulates a plan to set things right.

“Moving Day” nabs you from page one with its original plot and quick pacing.
