Local Scout, Peter Volmert, made a presentation to the Washington Park Board on a proposed Eagle Scout project at the riverfront trail.
Volmert, who is a part of Troop 439, St. Francis Borgia, presented during the board’s Dec. 6 meeting.
The project will be a riverfront trail enhancement that will beautify the entrance to the Rotary Riverfront Trail.
Enhancements will consist of landscaping with shrubs and perennials along the sides of the trail, as well as adding informational signs by the side of the trail.
Volmert said his intent was to give users of the trail an enhanced entrance.
“This will give a good impression of the trail and showcase the trail as a valuable asset to the Washington park system,” Volmert told the board, adding that the project would help Washington achieve its America in Bloom goals.
Volmert asked for advice on sign placement, as well as the type of sign the board thought would look best. He provided several examples of possible signs for the area and highlighted benefits of the various signs.
The Scout said he chose hearty, drought-resistant plants since the area is not irrigated.
Volmert will work with the parks staff on the project, which will have to be coordinated with the replacement of a cracking concrete slab.
Tessie Steffens, park board member, complimented Volmert on his plans and said he made good choices for the area. Another board member, Sparky Stuckenschneider, thanked Volmert for thinking of the parks for his project.
Park board members forwarded the request to the Washington City Council for approval.
