The race for secretary of state in Missouri is between two men who aren’t household names. The candidates are Republican Shane Schoeller and Democrat Jason Kander.

Both men have served in the Missouri House, with Schoeller more visible because of a leadership role. Schoeller before being elected to a House seat worked in the secretary of state’s office, gaining valuable experience. In the House, he has been out-front in open government issues and legislaton. He stands up for the Sunshine Law.

He also has backed legislation to stop the practice of using taxpayer funds for lobbyists. Taxing entities pay dues to organizations and associations that in turn hire lobbyists to promote their interests. That legislation hasn’t gone anywhere, but it has brought to the public’s attention a practice that should be stopped.

The secretary of state also is Missouri’s chief election official. That is a huge responsibility and Schoeller can handle that challenge due to his experience.

Because of his legislative experience and knowledge gained in working in the secretary of state’s office, Schoeller should find favor with voters.
